The schematic I am bread boarding from calls for a 220n tantalum cap.  The schematic is saying that it's polarized.  I've got quite a few .22 uF film caps laying around that don't seem to be polarized.  Can I use them in place of the polarized ones?

Sorry guys, I should have used the search function.  According to this thread http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=85108.0;prev_next=next it should be fine to use a non polarized cap.  Thanks

you can almost always replace an electro with a non-polarised, if the voltage rating is at least as high, and they nearly always are, and they will fit in yr available space.

If this is for a Tube Screamer, plenty of cloners use film caps in those spots. The stock circuit has tantalums there, but unless your set on making an accurate replica, film caps are almost always a better choice. Tantulum caps tend to be the first first thing to die on a board.

Geez....
And here I am waiting for my order from Tayda to finish my first TS-808 clone...

I could've just used film box ??

Crap.

It just depends on how 'accurate' you want to be. If it makes you feel warm and fuzzy inside to have an exact TS clone, then I'd wait for the tantulum caps. But for the sake of long-term reliability, the film caps are better. As far as if they sound any different, you'll never get a conclusive answer to that. At least in those spots, I don't notice a difference.

Last time I felt warm and fuzzy inside, my doctor told me it was lactose intolerance ;)
Well I saw that my package from Tayda just came in today so I'll have the tant caps for tonight. But my brother wants a TS-808 clone too, so I'll put together another one with filx box and try both to check differences...

Thanks !
