Need simple gain adjustable BC549 3 band eq driver

Need to try to drive the boogyman eq with a bc549 transistor.
The Bs170 buffers are breaking up trying to get unity gain out of itm one pre, one post.
Any direction to an existing buffer or should I use a cot electra type thing?
I have 2 cornish buffers but I'm a noob at setting gain on normal transistors.
