renegadrian fat boost layout question

hello all. i built a fat boost this afternoon using this layout:



it works, but the pedal does not overdrive when turning the gain up and volume down like i've heard it do in clips. basically the gain and volume controls both act as volumes. i even ran a SHO full up into it and turned the volume down on the fat boost to see if it would overdrive and it doesn't. i searched the forum and found a thread in which someone else experienced the same dual-volume result. i will say that i am using j201's because i don't have 2n5457's at the moment, but even still, wouldn't a SHO running full up into the fat boost with j201's distort?

it does the job i intended it to do regardless, but it is bothering me that i have a 3 knob pedal with 2 knobs that essentially do the same thing. anyone else built this using the same layout?

yeah i'm dumb...i hadn't labelled the pedal and had the gain and volume controls backwards in my head. my bad!
