here 99% of the regular visitors are pure genius!

Don't I know it ! Yet they still answer my dumbass questions. ( Big thanks guys )

I'm like the village idiot here.

But when I'm not making my music or being a stay home dad for my littlies, I work in construction; painter, carpenter and cabinet maker.

Those guys ( who have their own impressive skills and talents ) tend to make me feel like Einstein when it comes to the tea break conversations.

It's a good grounding for me posting here. I get to converse with real genius. What a site.

Back on topic..... is your new design an NE567 fuzz type sound? or a behemoth destroyer like the Thulsa? Or even better.... BOTH?

Starting to think I should have ordered ten chips instead of three.

Would it be a good move to include a reverse polarity protection diode in my build?

How easy are the 567 chips to fry in that situation?

Everything I know about electronics comes from this place (the amazing people here) and the incidental repairs at home ;). I have a background in music / video and graphic design and started to build my own stuff, simply because I couldnt afford any from the stores. Besides, I have an acquired taste when it comes to pedals and to make your own gives me a feeling of freedom :O eventhough some of them are pretty crappy.

the ' new' design is more fuzz like with a kind of filter pot .. but need to make a layout and soundsample before posting. if you like, you could also check out the thing-a-ma-bob nintendofuzz I build some time ago. it works on a 386 (do build it with the volumeknob) and has only 4 or 5 parts.

in my experience the 567 is hard to kill (maybe someone can enlighten the subject).. on my breadboard only the 386 fry when monkeying around except for sometimes an exloding LED ;) i never use protection diodes in my builds but its a small investment and will triple the total amount of parts in this project. so go for it!

This is really great stuff. I've created similar sounding circuits with 386 and 556 IC's, but this has fewer parts! I haven't thought of using the 567 in this way - just for trem and ring modulation. Keep the hits coming man!

Am I the only one who can't get to the audio files? I wanna hear this thing! When I click on the link, it takes me to the host's homepage, but nothing to listen to.

Worked for me when the thread started, but when I clicked on it just then I got the host's page, as you did.

Kept the soundfile on my HDD tho.

If you want to PM me an email address I can pass it on to you.

Mark 2 layout:

Polarity protection added.

Trimpot position corrected. Free tab unconnected.

Marked out position for standoff ( 3mm hole )

If anyone wants a ready to print PCB mask for this layout, go here:

filedropper only keeps the files a couple of days, apparently but here it is again:

YEAH!! Thanks for the upload. P Bass ---> Thulsadoom --> Ampeg would definitely send all my pets heading for other parts of the house! Just bought a metal can NE on Ebay. We'll see if it works.

OK.... chips finally turned up!

Two National LM567CN

And one ( signetics? ) NE567N.

The mystery bag!

Of to the breadboard then..... will let you know if either gets the tone right.

Both the NE567N and the LM567CN work in this circuit.

Couldn't really tell any difference between the two.

I don't have a KA567 to compare to, but I'm getting the sounds that were on the sound sample with these chips.

The Adjustment of the 2K2 trimpot alters the nature of the beast so drastically I'm thinking of swapping it out for a pot.

I like how it doesn't really care what fret you are on.... just seems to pick a random pitch and spit it out.

Brilliant effect. Now I've just got to work out a way to use it!

good to hear you got it working. the 2k2 trimpot gives some 'whine' on the lowest values but I agree that a pot with a fixed resistor of some value will give you more control over the sound. I think the higher frets work best. the lowest three are a bit muddy :)

After re-listening to your sound sample, I feel I have to correct myself.

The NE/LM in this circuit is definitely a different beast than using the KA567.

On your sound sample you can tell when you're playing up at the 12th.

With the NE567 in frets 1-5 give you notes in the same octave as you get on 12-17.

The notes are kind of random, but seem to be a harmonic of the original note.

The NE/LM definitely * destroys * more.

I'll try to get a sound sample up.

To ball-park it, mine sounds more like those synthy noises at the beginning of American Horror Story ( TV show ) especially when biased down. Gets less ' gatey ' with higher bias voltage.

I love it, but it's a different animal.

Will keep my eye out for a KA. I want both!

have you tried it on anything else?  I used mine on a casio keyboard and it sounded amazing. extreme basses. i cant remember the guitar .. thought it was something of a messy fuzz.
thanks for your reply.. the mp3 i posted has been deleted again unfortunately so need to up it somewhere else.

Still mucking around with it just with a bass. Getting some great sounds.

Finding it hard to work out what effects what to make a sound.

The volume knob seems interactive with the speed of the sound....

Managed to get some sounds closer to your sample by turning the volume knob down and changing the bias trimpot to about 40R.

I've found it cuts out about 2R and gives an endless tone ( well, feedback, but sounds different ) at about 1.7K

Well, that was before I found this all changes when using the volume knob ( a 10k trimmer on my BB ) or mixing in the dry signal ( via the bass switch )

The more I play with this the less I know and the more I learn, LOL.

Gonna spend a while on the breadboard yet while I sort out what I want.

Enjoying this project thoroughly, cheers. :)
