Building an effect to plug straight into guitar

I've got a buffer/booster effect that I'd like to build into a box that plugs right into the guitar jack, like the old Jordan Bosstone:

Anyone done this before? Any suggestions on an enclosure or plug to use? I'd like to go plastic so it's lightweight, and I'm wondering what challenges I might face with the plug, thinking about the recessed jacks on guitars like strats and teles. Any advice would be much appreciated!

It might be better to have some kind of clip to mount it on the guitar, then a short lead with a plug on the end.
If at first you don't succeed... use bigger transistors!

I'd just build the box with an input and an output jack and a clip to put on on your strap or belt. That way, you could just run a short patch cable to any guitar and not worry about the jack angle on whichever guitar you plug into it.

This shape would be a problem with a strat.  Plastic is nice, but there is a reason many of us keep buying the more expensive cast aluminum boxes - the shielding is essential.  If it is just a buffer, it should be simple enough to just build it and see if it meets your needs.

I would advice making it a clip on for you guitar strap as well. I have done this with a treblebooster. I've used a beltclip from a broken tapeline and added a strapbutton to make it more stable. You can get these size boxes in abs plastic as well, you will need to shield it using foil though.

I've attached it quite low on my strap, causing the beltclip and enclosure to damage the finish on my guitar, which I don't mind, but others might, so it might be better attaching it higher on the belt.

i did that strap thing with a 'tiger preamp' a la jerry garcia... built it into a 1.5" by 1.5" plastic box/ with small pc mount jacks, tight layout but works great and wont damage your guitar jack, used a thin velcro type wrap found at a home depot to secure it to the strap and another wrap for the battery, battery is outside the box on mine, to keep it small and flexible. plastic to reduce guitar dings... works great and is pretty low profile.
