I know...it's probably all over the forum but a search only got me reading a few hours of other cool stuff :-(
I'm a paint by numbers builder (gimme a layout and a BOM and a PCB and an iron and I can build like no one's business. but gimme a schem and a calculator and a drawer full of components and I'm LOST). I've done some fuzzes and some easy bufferless screamers (Eternity clones) and have built a simple tube amp or two and have modded all my others.
I want a Timmy. I can probably snag one for under $120 on eGay with some patience and diligence ...OR I can track down a kit or board and bom and a layout and instructions and build one myself.

So...can someone point me in the direction of a FAITHFUL repro of the Timmy in a DIY kit or layout, pcb and bom please?
Feel free to pm me or email me (same name at gmail) or post here for everyone to see...or all of the above.
Thanks in advance.

Build a Tube Screamer from any of the layouts posted around and do the following:

1) replaced the 1+1 diode pair in the clipping stage with a 2+2 diode pair; same diode type.  You'll have to solder them in a sort of arc to fit the space, but its easily done and nonproblematic.

2) replace the 4558 with a 1458 (really and truly it DOES sound better, and less harsh, due to the limitations of the 1458)

3) replace the 4k7 resistor on the first stage with 3k3 and a 10k variable resistance in series, and the .047uf cap with a  .1-.22uf cap

This will NOT make it a note-for-note Timmy, but it will do 85% of what a Timmy does.

What does a Timmy do?:

  • it allows for a higher clipping threshold and greater dynamics (done)
  • it yields a hotter output level to push the amp harder (done)
  • it allows for adjustment of the bottom end to reduce the nasal quality of the basic pedal (done)
  • it allows for a broader range of slightly colored (as opposed to perceptible overdriven) tones (done)

The tone control on a TS and the Treble control on a Timmy work differently, but changing from the one to the other is not essential to reap the benefits IMHO.

Thanks for posting that info Mark,I have an unused TS8 board I know what to do with now!

If you are comfortable with vero and sourcing your own part, there is a website (I would say the most popular diy vero and turret board site out there) that has a verified layout, and it's a very low parts count. Not sure if that's anything you're into, but it's there. I'm also not sure if its cool to directly name this site so I'm being a little mystic. I will throw out the obligitory disclosure that Paul C is a great dude and simply picking up a real timmy is both awesome and a great value for the dollars. That being said, I did build one before buying (bought one simply as a sign of respect an he's not a strangerntonthe diy community so I was into supporting him).

Just PM me the link if you would,I would like to at least see it. :icon_cool:
