Fuzz Face NPN only outputs when bypassed

I'm trying to build a Fuzz Face NPN. This one to be exact.

I have everything assembled but it only outputs a clean sound when it is bypassed. When it's turned on it only outputs a very small hum which increases or decreases with the volume pot. I've looked over it several times and I can't see anything obviously wrong. My soldering isn't the neatest but I don't see any problems with it. The battery isn't the problem either.

Unfortunately I don't have a multimeter here so I can't measure anything but I'm hoping it's a simple enough problem that somebody here can fix it.

This is the circuit I'm using, except it has a 100KA volume pot and a 22uf capacitor instead of 20uf.

Here's some pictures. I can take new ones if these aren't good enough. Click for bigger

Any help is appreciated

welcome to the forum..

must get multimeter...voltages most important

in the meantime, someone may check out the pics for an obvious error

edit:
always try without switch(es) 1st to eliminate it as possible error
always think outside the box

Not to be rude but... most of those look awful. Like the part lead is not even touching the vero-copper via solder.
