Nixie supply - inductor rating?

Hi,
I built a max1771 SMPS with a radial and another with a toroidal inductor using Frequencycentral's layout, both inductors are 100uF 3A .

I'm running a 12ax7 12au7 SE amp and near max volume the voltage drops to 180 V for the radial inductor and 160 V for the toroidal. The SMPS was adjusted to stay at 200 V with lower volume settings.



The radial inductor introduces a lot of noise, while the toroidal is quieter, but runs hotter. I'm using the irf840 mosfet and only the toroidal inductor get's very hot.

I need some advice to reduce the noise when using the radial inductor or maybe something to improve the toroidal indurctor's performance.

Any idea?
