I have done several SD1 mods with this clipping arrangement ... and its sounds pretty good for the most part .
This was posted as a Brian Wampler SD1 Full clone2 alike mod .

D6 = 1n34a + 1n4001
D5 = 1n4001
D4 = 1n34a + 1n4001

I find when you roll the drive pot up past half way or better , it begins to break up or distort / clip , and not in a nice way
Is there a way to alleviate this ?
I'm really after a tighter sound when driven hard ...

Thanks for any help !!!

You could try removing the 1n34A diodes, which will clip sooner than the others.  If you replace them with 1N400x diodes, you'll break up later.  A single diode will clip earlier than one in series with other diodes.  You could try adding a THIRD diode in series, too...

You didn't link to the schematic, so I can't tell exactly what D6-D4 are; I am guessing you're referring to the clipping diodes here....

would putting a small value cap in the FB loop like the TS help soften this as well ?

ie:  47pf or 100pf in Parallel with clipper etc...

That would take out some of the really high end distortion, it might smooth it out a little for you.
