Uhhh...it kind of depends...What is it?

If it is a phaser or flanger with a rate LED...you might want to put it up between the first two controls.

If the LED is for effect  On/Off indication I would probably put it above or to the left of the footswitch.
I just designed a new fuzz circuit! It almost sounds a little different than the last fifty fuzz circuits I designed! ;)

I would place it to the left of the switch like the original.

Put it in line with the two left controls so that it looks more symmetrical.

I usually decide on LED placement from inside the box.

It mostly depends on where I can fit it.  :icon_wink:

I am the Nightrider. I'm a fuel injected stompbox machine. I am the rocker, I am the roller, I am the MIDI-controller!

I usually bezel, but that's just me.  My bigger question is if you plan to put any labels on the controls when you do the artwork.  Not much room left for anything that can be read at a distance. Smaller knobs would be my choice.

Just for a cosmetic aspect, I would put it in the center, between the top knobs.
Also use a clear led, with a metal mount. It has a very classy look

Obviously it should go where the fourth knob isn't.

What is obvious to some may be subjective to others.  :icon_wink:

I would never put the footswitch off center to start. I also see some builds with the input/output jacks positioned down by the footswitch.....not for me!

In this case...my opinion of course...with the footswitch off center and the LED being a much smaller size than the knobs, filling the space where the fourth knob isn't wouldn't look symmetrical.

How about something like this:

I quite like the look of the only slightly coloured diffused lenses, if you can find ones with a bit of output. some sort of bezel is good for holding in/mounting on.

assymetry is fine by me. jamb the stuff in wherever it fits. make a cardboard mock-up the size of your box, knock thru some holes, shift them about till you find something asthetic, then drill the holes.

I think that I mentioned in another post...I used to use 5mm LEDs and bezels but the last year or so I have leaned toward 3mm and a drill hole in the enclosure just large enough to fit the LED.

This looks much "cleaner" to me.
