I am trying to do an NPN version of this circuit, and I'm having a tough time getting a sense of what NPN transistors would be a good match at emulating the characteristics of the original 2N4061 device.  I've got several BC550's some of which have about the right Hfe and are good for taming hiss and noise in other contexts...would that work well in this circuit?

It's not a direct equivalent, but the BC550 ought to be fine in most circuits. The 2N4061 is a pretty middle-of-the-road transistor.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

Hornby Skewes treble booster is an extremely un-fussy circuit. I doubt you could find a Silicon transistor that didn't work just-the-same.

Any "mojo" is the heavy bass-cut (input C-R), and whatever comes out of the kitchen (mustard caps, fish caps, etc...)
