crackle from transistor circuit even with no transistor. What is your theory?

I can't tell what's going on. I'm assuming that the 9v is flowing into the circuit, but then again, it might not be. Even with the transistor removed it still happens, which it shouldn't, because it's only connected to passive components.

Best I can tell, it is connected straight to the input cap, and nothing else. except the 1m. the cable is fine... gorsh. what could it be?

Dodgy solder connection on the input/output jack?  1/2 broken jumper wire?  Bad cap?  Clearly you have something "present" when the transistor isn't in place (Which one, or both?).  That sound reminds me a lot of DC on a pot...bad cap >> DC on a pot?

It is pretty nasty, both transistors are out. Let me take 9v and just leave gnd, and see if it's good.
