A 4558 wont work in its place? I thought you could switch these types of IC chips in and out. I am not all that skilled with IC's yet but the pinouts look similar to me.

They are pin compatable, but sometimes the context matters - what circuit are you playing with?

1) How many times have I pulled a dual op-amp out of a socket, and between removal and installation of another chip, I forgot which end was supposed to go where?  I'm not saying because it would blow my reputation.

2) It is not uncommon for chips to get a pin or two bent underneath during insertion, such that they LOOK installed from above, but really only have 6 or 7 pins connected.

Of course, if this is a matter of soldering something directly to the board, then my observations do not apply.

But one should be able to pull just about any 8-pin dual op-amp, and insert just about any other 8-pin dual op-amp, and have the circuit function.  It way not function as well, but it will work.

Just to clarify your statement Mark, this applies to the audio path, for LFOs, envelope followers etc, Op-Amp type can be important for any functioning.

You're right, of course.  I recall an experiment I did over a decade back, trying out different dual op-amps with a standard Dr. Q circuit.  Some simply wouldn't sweep, while others swept sooo fast and wide that they were unusable.  Only the 1458 behaved appropriately, which is why Jack Orman came up with the biasing circuit that allowed the Dr. Quack and Nurse Quacky to function with a much broader selection of dual op-amps.

trying to build the suhr riot from tagboard but its not turning out ..I am just going to scrap the project because I am tired of fooling with it, cant get it to work at all .

I had this same problem and ended up using NE5532. Found it worked well and have since built 3 more. It's worth it, best high gain distortion I've built. Don't give up!

Drive current requirement into the clipping diode/led network looks rather high. That's the only thing I can think of that could upset some op-amps. See if you get signal with the fixed LEDs out of circuit (D8 & 9 in the scheme I have). If you don't, my bet is you have some error, not an unsuitable amp type.

Theres at least one tagboard riot with errors
Search suhr riot fixed!!!! IIRC
I have some related stuff somewhere archived.

Edit
I'll just add this
