Hi!

I'm in the planning stages of building my first pedal, an MXR Distortion II.  The schematic calls for TL072 op amps, but all I can find in my area are TL072CP or other variants.

If I want a clone of the original pedal, do I need the TL072?  Or will the TL072CP sound exactly the same?

Thanks!

PRR

TL072 is one chip available in many packages.

There's a full list of package codes in the datasheet. However the just plain CP has gone out of style (and production*) so is not in the latest data sheet.

TL072CP is:

C temperature grade; plenty good for any room you would play

P Plastic DIP package; the type most used by hobbyists for several decades

(*) While out-of-production at the major foundries, Millions were made over the decades and distributors have Huge Stocks awaiting buyers. The PDIP form may also be available from minor foundries catering to end-of-life demand. While I *have* been bit by using an "obsolete" chip long-term, I'd guess that TL072 in PDIP will be around for decades to come.

I'd just like to add a couple of things:

There's a thread on this topic over on Madbean:

There's also a note "What do all the letters after the numbers mean at the end of an IC?" in the FAQ (about half way down)
