i found an old kay vanguard 708 guitar amp today, gonna be a few days until it comes in so no idea if i'll need them or not, but checking the schematic on prowess amps
http://www.prowessamplifiers.com/sch...ges/Kay708.pdf
it says q1 (2 of 'em actually... they use the same name for in some cases up to 5 transistors apparently) is 34418, but i've searched high and low and can't find anything at all about them.

i'm assuming it's a medium gain pnp germanium, but am not confident enough to be sure. the last kay amp the forum helped me with had a dead transistor in the second stage, so i'd love it if someone could please give me some info on these, so i can try and find a decent cross ref if i need to.

pretty sure the transistors themselves will be unobtanium.
thanks so much!!

I'd say, in the 708, Q1 could be "any non-junk" PNP Ge.

It might even be low-spec (low breakdown voltage) 2N408.

Figure out if you really have a problem before you fret.

Jimi, try Matsushita 2SB172-75-76 family.

thanks guys... so far, looking like it may be a motorola number.
i've found some jfets, but they're npn and definitely not right.

i just ordered a bunch of 404's tonite, so i'll have some on hand, and have a lot of pnp ge's.
i always usually (ha, oxymoron) buy q's for any amp like this asap, cuz sometimes they're impossible to find.. i mean this amp was made somewhere between 62 and 65 or so, so it's gonna be tough to match up.

i found the power transistors, gonna buy a lot of 6 so i can get a better deal... that will leave me one spare.
this was my first "real-ish" amp... 35 watts at 16 ohms, i used to run it at 4 ohms thru a pair of jbl 12's.. it was insane!! ;)

Yo Jimi...

If you look at the Kay 704, they use a 2N2613 in the Q1 slot, along with 2N408 in Q2. Sorta looks similar to what might be going on in the 708.

I would bet my donut on it being something like a 2N2613, i.e. NTE102A, AC125...126, AC151, 2SB54, 2SB56, ASY27, 2N1305, or if you have any Russian stock, MP42B.
