hey dudes-  thinkin about tackling this project.  i read a few threads on it. one builder says you need to use shileded cable in certain spots.

i was wonderin....do you ground just one end of the shielding like in a tube amp?  and where? to the ground lug of the pot....or run them to a "central" spot, like a jack?

thank you  :)

I connect mine to the earth terminal on the jack coz it's near, looks neat and works.
Also, make sure the jack earths are well connected to each other or you'll be picking up radio Russia. Otherwise, it's a pretty quiet pedal

Yeah, you ground just one end of the shielding, to avoid ground loops.

Yep that's the way for me too.
Great project. My advice take your time setting the drain voltages.
I tend to go back to it after a few days and relisten before settling on a final settings.
Have fun and chose your layout wisely.

The gain pot can be the worst offender in regards to hum and noise... If you're not using a layout with an on-board gain pot then be aware of that.
Doesn't matter what you did to get it... If it sounds good, then it is good!

In my latest DB I shielded the 3 wires for the gain pot, the in/out wires from the board to footswitch, and the in/out wires from the footswitch to jacks. It was definitely the most quiet one I've ever built, heh.

I didn't shield anything :P I've built a few of them and they aren't dead silent when you're not playing, but they're not terrible. Though the 1590B layout I've been using lately is noticeably quieter than the 1590BB layout I used to use.

Oh one other thing IIRC one of the Va or Vb connections is wrong in some schematic's.
I'll look up my printed copy and report back and see if I'm right.

Right see the Gus Markov schematic below

http://gaussmarkov.net/layouts/drboo/drboo-schem.png

Q5 drain goes to Va not Vb in the power supply

Don't ask me why it should matter but. Found it did.
Maybe a knowledgable person can chip in.

Kipper.....so the gaussmarkov schem. is incorrect?

Maybe someone can confirm this but in my notes from my build thats how i have it wired.
Although I'm not sure it should make that much difference since its only 100ohms series between the two V+'s.

Edit
heres the Gus thread, happy reading.

pretty sure the VA go to the first 2 jfet and the VB goes to the rest although, you probably don't gain much by using them since everything but the Q5 buffer are on trimmers anyway...

The madbean chunk chunk is a bit more refined

It's double-sided so there's no transfer out there, but Brian usually keeps the boards in stock. I used one of his boards for my first Dr. Boogie and I love the layout. Super clean, board-mounted pots, and test points for biasing. Definitely worth the few bucks to get one of his boards :)

Sure --> click  ($11 well-spent.)

I also built a Boogie from one of Brian's boards.  It's a great pedal.
