I clearcoat with clear nail polish -- turns out very nice, tough as... well, finger nails plus you don't need to bake it, or leave it to dry long.

Interesting! Is it brittle at all, or do you find it fairly chip-resistant?

Nail polish is nitrocellulose lacquer.  You can get that in a spray can if you don't want to brush it on.  Stew-Mac and ReRanch are a couple places that carry it.
