That type of power-pack was in general use long before DIY CNC was practical.

You find this or the older linear supplies in thousands of products not made in large enough quantity to need custom supplies. Go to the hospital (to look, not for need). While the X-ray and MRI magic-transducers use huge custom supplies, all the positioning, bias, and readout frills are powered with semi-open frame supplies like this one. (Hid in a cabinet for neat safety.) 48V for grunt motors, 5V for misc logic, 24V for relay matrix... whatever you want, just tick the boxes on a quote-sheet.

While I have seen similar 12V stuff marketed directly for LED-tape supply, there are now constant-current (to 300VDC) supplies for series feed of any number of LEDs for room lighting.
