Hey guys,
I'm making an effects unit for a friend, the idea is its a delay/boost/chorus in one standalone unit, which will be an upright effect that would sit on top of an amp almost like a rack effect, but he wants an external footswitch to come from the unit to bypass the Delay and Boost seperately with 2 different footswitches. Hoping to connect to the unit with like a TRS cable or something. How would i do this? I'm assuming this unit wont be true bypass if i manage to do this, i assume its buffered? Any advice/links or anything i can get on how to do this would be really appreciated.
Thanks Guys!

If you only want a series combination of 2 out of 3 effects, you can make it with 2 X 3PDT switches (for Delay & Boost)

e.g.
Guitar OUT -> SW1 -> Delay IN or Delay Bypass -> SW2 -> Boost IN or Bypass -> Chorus

You can even obtain it with a single DPDT switch (or 3PDT one if you want both Delay & Boost bypassed) but you'll have no indicator LEDs and bypassed effect IN (or OUT) should always be engaged..  :icon_wink:

First, read The Technology of Bypasses at geofex.com. This will give you the tech background.

You have a few options to pick from.

You can just remove the footswitch and run audio to and from the footswitch out onto the stage. Long cables carrying audio are always a problem, and can cause hum, noise pickup, and treble loss. I would only do this if there is no other way available.

For pedals like Boss and Ibanez and some others where there is an internal electronic bypass, you can simply run an external momentary footswitch which is electrically in parallel with the internal footswith. No hum, noise, etc. See the Technology of Boss and Ibanez bypassing, also at geofex.

"True Bypass" is the solution to a problem that pedals really no longer have, but if you insist on making the pedal true bypass, or if it already is, you can use an internal or external relay bypass, and run  only the relay activation wires out to the on-stage footswitch. There are a number of small relay PCBs to do this available from several sources.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
