Solder is still warm at midnight and my new LPB2 works!  Can't believe it.
The catch is that the wife, kids and mother-in-law are all asleep so I can't blast it.

This is my third attempt.  I had the bug like 2 years ago (and failed miserably) and finally got a couple more parts today.  Used some perfboard and stared at a couple of internet schematics until I could get my head around the whole thing.

Now, where is it best?  Before the wah?  After the whole chain?
Before or after the Big Muff?!?

Just had to shout out loud...

Yay! congrats!
If you read through a lot of posts you'll find that a lot of 'favourite builds' are simple boosters and such, because they are the more practical things you will actually use. I love the wilder pedals like the Uglyface etc, they are fun but I don't really get many opportunities to use em.

I'd go for first in the chain, especially if you have single coil pickups, but play around...

Here's another question:  Any other transistors good besides the ubiquitous 2N5089?   I think I have some laying around--can I just "plug and play" or will I burn the thing out?

You should be fine plugging other trannys is as long as you observe the proper pinout. The 2N5088 is a little bit lower gain than the 2N5089, but still high gain. The 2N3904 is a good bit lower in gain too. Socket it and play around with the tranny until you find one that works best.

Also, there are a number of simple JFET boosters that sound a little bit more tube like. Check out the minibooster at muzique.com.

Congrats on the build! It starts out small but you will be addicted before you know it. Just make sure you practice as much as you solder!
