Actually one thing I'd worry about is the the Schottky diodes I ordered had a forward voltage of about 340mv, as opposed to 275mv for the germaniums. I guess I wouldn't know until I actually tried it, but it may be difficult to objectively come up with a comparison, given that they'd be different volumes - people are prone to liking things that are louder when AB testing things, even if the difference seems subtle or almost indiscernible, a' la the loudness wars.
