Bazz Fuss. It's brilliantly simple and highly modifiable.

In links, schematics, schematics 2.
 plenty of stuff.
I built a Blackfire OD quite rapidly [no crossing wires], 5 transistors, 4 caps, and some of the resistors [on the collectors] got socketted.  Totally worthy build, a top shelf high gain distortion.
The FET driver [circuit snippets] 3 Jfet OD...excellent tone !!
OD 250 [DOD] is a Dist+ type ckt ...OA /with clipping diodes, very easy, easy parts roundup. But I would go with the Sonic Distortion [Ibanez], as it seems to be pretty good, I like these cause they're all predictable and easy to use live for that 'generic' sound [I calls it].

Joe Gagan's EasyFace or my NPN version the EZ-FUZZ.  The names say it all.

I'll echo Tim's suggestion of the Bazz Fuss.

While simple is a relative term, it's difficult to produce a circuit that sounds better with only six components (counting the volume pot).

The Bazz Fuzz is definitely easy and sounds great. I've built two (just finished one Saturday) and I love them. I recommend doing as the article on Runoffgroove says and socketing everything. I used the 1N914 diode and 2N5088 transistor but plan on experimenting to find the best sound for my amp.
