if you wanted to go mojo on a build, which op-amp would you choose?
i have 4 older chips to consider

DIP-8

TA7358

TA7558

What is the circuit?

What are the pinouts (are they compatible with your circuit)?

What is your goal?

If pinouts allow, socket, and let your ears be you guide.

Sorry for the mundane answer, but in many cases, I've found little difference mojo-wise sound-wise by plugging in exotic opamps. Depending on the circuit, you may hear some minor difference if, say, you compare an 072 to a 4558 (jfet vs bjt input), if the circuit will even support both.

Otherwise, most of the "mojo" generally comes from the gutshot. For me, a JRC4558T or CA1458T can looks sexy, but in reality, I know that an RC4558 DIP will do the exact same job. My eyes may make my ears believe that it sounds better.... but that's my own psychosomatic illness, and I accept that. :icon_lol:

Ts808 i know theyre pin compatible. There prob wont be any difference at all. I will test and see.
I built a big muff ic version with old 'can type' LM741 and there is definitely a difference between the current DIP version, much tighter sounding.

To me, nothing says mojo like some black epoxy covering up the part labels.   :icon_wink:

More seriously though, despite the fact that I have a M.S. degree in E.E., I have been guilty on more than one build of blindly listening to anyone who suggests a specific op amp for a particular circuit.   :icon_redface:

Use the hardest to find part, or something generally obscure. Russian KR140UD17B?  ;) Or expensive parts. OPA2134, LME49720 and the like.

Nothing like the warm buttery sound of TL072 with its markings sanded off.

Many major manufacturers will use the 5218 in circuits that demand lower noise.  It IS a generally lower-noise chip.  Not "audiophile" quality, but quieter.

I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

That MUSES chip is super sexy!

Here are some quotes from their marketing materials:

"Pursuing the numbers shown in the catalogue would be one of the guideline choosing Semiconductor Device in the market. On the other hand, what we have been searching for is more than just spec numbers, but having an effect on all the music fan' emotion."
How very true!  You can use specs to choose an op amp, or you can use your emotions!  :icon_lol:

"Comparing to existing regular Op-Amps, MUSES's circuit is much more refined, and it doesn't take any single sound source away from the original."
Getting audio out when I put audio in is important to me.  :icon_rolleyes:

"The selected material brings you to feel the infinite music with the breath of performers."
I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds very immersive yet creepy somehow.  :icon_razz:

"MUSES series has been seeking to reproduce 'Real Pure Sound' of heartquake."

Saw the chip advertised in Audio Xpress and was curious.  My curiosity has now abated.

How about sip-8 Op amps? any mojo in any of em'? I've been interested in doing some circuits with these, seems like it'd be easier for vero layouts being that the pins are in-line with each other?

Nothing says mojo like a vacuum tube op amp...  and only plus and minus 300v supplies required.
