The fact that two circuits, built back to back, failed with the same symptoms despite being built with different components, suggests to me that they both suffered the same problem, which is likely independent of the components themselves....

Technical difficulties.  Please stand by.

It's a bit difficult to see the resistor color codes from the picture but are you certain that the 10M and the 1M resistors are correct?
Also the 680R resistor looks like a 68R. Everything else looks alright from what I can see.

You should you use an Audio Probe and probe the signal from input to output.

Do you have an audio probe?

If not you should DIY one, really easy to build and will help you out a lot in the future

Perhaps some voltage measurements are in order at this point.

Hey all,

Been cracking on with other builds and forgot to update anyone interested about this problem.

I found the schematic for that layout and went around it with a signal generator. As suspected, it was the JFETs. I don't know why I suspected them, but on the re-build I put in sockets specifically so that I could easily swap them out.

What confuses me, is that I bought the pair of 2n4416's from two completely different suppliers for each build. I triple checked the pin-outs on data sheets, and I even experimented with different orientations in the very unlikely scenario that the data sheets were wrong.

Anyway, I ended up just getting a pair of J201's and they worked perfectly then. That was REALLY frustrating, so I am just glad its fixed!!!

Thanks for the suggestions and advice everyone.
Steve.

Maybe they were killed by ESD?

Though, your writing style smacks of the British Isles, a place I've never been to but a place I would expect to have minimal issue with static electricity.

Can't say I've had a problem with such a thing before. I work in a relatively static free environment, no carpeted flooring etc.

Thanks for the suggestion though.

I believe this would be unlikely with JFETs.  MOSFETs on the other hand...

Ohm's Law - much like Coles Law, but with less cabbage...
