Is anyone using ecad.io for pedal rendering and to layout drilling, etc.?  Are there any other tools you are using and like for rendering from Eagle schematic/board files?

Rixen

Not Eagle, but I use Autotrax DEX which has 3d built in...

This looks pretty awesome. Have you found libraries for most of the parts you need?

Rixen

no, but the parts are easy to make, especially if they fit in with the parametric part builder (builds standard parts like headers, dip, axial and radial BGA, smt etc)
had to make up 16mm pots etc.
I thought it was awesome that it applied the correct colour bands to banded resistors..

here is a render of a board I did, and a picture of the real thing.

What kind of effort was involved in creating those pots?  I imagine I won't have a lot of parts that are non-standard (most will obviously be IC's, caps, resistors), but I certainly wouldn't want to spend three days making a pot.

Can you not just import STEP files? I don't use Eagle, but Altium and DipTrace both let you import STEP files, so I've been able to find all the 3D models I need on https://grabcad.com/

I think it took a couple of hours to do the pots, but I was learning the tools as I went. They are composed of a simple set of rectangular and cylindical extrusions.

I'll second Nathan. STEP is more universal format and quite common for 3D software, allowing you to bounce models back and forth between programs if it requires tweaking.

Few months ago I started a thread about sharing stompbox-related models in members section:

although did not update it in a while.
(I plan to find pin header models and various on-board connectors next, useful for multi-layed boards. And more Lorlin-type rotary switches.  :))

Thanks guys. I'll do some homework on STEP and report back.
