Boost/Fuzz/Green Ringer combo: possible or hassel?

Hi everyone! I've been doing a ton of reading on this forum recently and think I want to try out three different simple pedal designs: the SHO Booster, Fuzz Face (ideally with Ge transistors), and the Green Ringer octave up (the null mod Mark Hammer details looks awesome too)

I think I understand the basics of how each of these pedals work, and I have a good idea how you could wire two or three together using true bypass 3DPT foot switches, so my questions are:

What order should they go in? (my first thought is SHO,FF,GR)

Would having a boost in the circuit already make the first transistor boost stage of the GR obsolete or improve on it?

How can I tell if a single 9v power supply would suffice for all three or if I should look into two or more power supplies, especially considering my next question:

Given that the classic Ge fuzz face circuit uses a positive ground, what is the best way to reconcile that discrepancy in a board full of negative ground pedals? Should I just use a wall wort to provide it dedicated power and leave the circuit untouched, or is there a fairly simple non-comprimising mod to make it compatible with other pedals and not worry about shorting the whole thing?


And finally, on a more theoretical note, I've seen some great explanations on how the green ringer functions and how to improve it on here already, but I'm having trouble understanding how it's general schematic achieves a second octave, specifically how the matching Diodes act as a full wave rectifier. I've seen several full wave rectifying circuits that employ a transformer of some kind, and of course the bridge rectifier that uses 4 diodes, but the GR schems I've seen only seem to use 2 diodes so I'm unclear on how they achieve the full wave rectifying.

I'll include the schematics for the SHO I found, and the ones listed on General Guitar Gadgets are my references for the GR and FF. I'll include links to those PDF's below.

Welcome :)

The order of the pedals depends on what you want stacking them to do. Putting a boost before another gain pedal generally results in increasing the gain of the second pedal, as you're slamming the input stage with more than just a clean guitar signal. A boost at the end of a chain (where I usually put them) is good for kicking the volume up a bit for playing leads, etc.

As for power supply, it depends on what your supply can handle. But unless you have an extremely weak supply (<100mA or so) one supply should be able to power all three of these with no problems. Analog effects typically don't use much current, usually in the handful of mA range each, and most power supplies (at least that I see) provide hundreds of mA.

I think you have your grounding mixed up. Green Ringer and SHO are negative ground, the classic Fuzz Face is positive ground. The way I usually like to deal with this is by building negative ground fuzz faces :P http://www.muzique.com/lab/fuzzface.htm

You may want to read up a bit more on rectifiers https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rectifier#Full-wave_rectification While a bridge rectifier is often the preferred means of full-wave rectification, it is not the only way. Two diodes may be used for full-wave rectification when a center tap is present. And a transformer isn't a necessary part of a rectifier, it's usually what's being rectified. Transformer: transforms AC signals; Rectifier: rectifies AC signals into DC signals.
