Mounting slots in pcb

Do you have any special techniques for creating slots in home-made pcbs? These are for pcb- mount potentiometers and mounting tags for audio transformers etc.

I usually drill a few holes and then try to join them up but it's really fiddly and not very elegant. Is there a proper way to do this?

The most effective/workable method I ever found was to drill one hole about the size you need it then use a small file (or razor blade, depending on slot size) to get the rest of the shape out.

Or the lazy method, just drill a super big hole that will fit the slotted component and fill in the extra space with solder

Nathan has the right idea.

Other than that I'd leave anything elegant to the fabrication companies. Your homebrew PCB doesn't have to be perfect for a one-time solder job. Right?
