Bypassed pedal makes sound, but not when it’s on

I'm building my first pedal and when the effect is off, sound comes out. But when it's on, it's silent. I have all the pieces in the rights spots; however I do have some unused ground pads. I also have an unused +9v pad, I don't really know what that's for? Any help is appreciated

Welcome, Beans!   Ok, well we need some info to work with first!  There could be several reasons the thing isn't working for you.

Go to this page, copy the text to here and fill in the answers that you can, ok?  That will give us a place to start.

It's an "Overdrive Guitar Pedal DIY Complete Kit" from guitar pedal parts, https://guitarpedalparts.com/products/overdrive-guitar-pedal-diy-complete-kit . I tried to follow as closely as possible but there wasn't much of an explanation. I matched the numbers on the PCB to the resistors and caps and such. I didn't make any substitutions or mods. It's two 2n7000 transistors, I looked it up and it says they're n channel (which I believe is pnp). It lets sound through while bypassed, but not while on. I don't have a schematic, but I recorded the data going from one component to the other

Battery out of circuit voltage is 8.53v
Q1 C=.8v     Q2 C=.6v        D1 A=1.8v   D2 A=-.7v   D3 A=-.5v   D4 A=0v
     B=0v           B=0v              K=-.3v         K=-.3v        K=-.3v        K=.1v
     E=.5v          E=-.8v

I've had this happen a few times before.  Every time, the cause was the same:  I plugged my guitar into the output and my amp into the input by mistake.  I haven't looked at the details of your project yet, but wanted to add this as a reminder that proper debugging may include checking the things you "know" are correct.

You need to connect the +9v DC power to the +9v Pad, (battery or PSU) without power the pedal will not work. Bypass works as it will totally bypass the pedal signal allowing a non effect sound through (true bypass switching).

It is difficult to see in the picture but I would suspect you have the power supple jack incorrectly wired to the pads, the psu jack is also used to switch the battery out of circuit when a psu is connected so if you get that wired the wrong way around the pedal will not get power correctly.

If not this then check what EBK said about input output leads.

So I've disconnected the LED and the DC power jack from the pcb so I could show you guys and see if you could figure out what's going on but I've just come up with a good idea/question. If the 2n7000 is a pnp, would that mean I connect the negative to the +9v and the positive to ground(to get a negative voltage)? I've tried to connect the positive terminal of the DC to the pads in the red circles(they're connected on the other side, shown by the green line). The yellow lines show which sides the bands of the diodes are supposed to be on (according to the pcb) so they're all in the right way. I have the two "extra" ground pads in the blue circles, but I don't know what would connect to those.

2N7000 isn't a pnp, or an npn....or a BJT...it's a Mosfet!   Don't reverse the connections!  Yes, it's an 'n channel', but not the same thing.

Keep working with the advice given here, it's almost certainly a simple error!  :)
