I just managed to purchase enough of the aforementioned transistors to make a MK II with three of each...that is, I could make my MK II entirely with the 81's, the 81D's, or the 81DM's.

Of course, everyone knows that the 81D's were in some of the coveted original units and they sound great.  Does anybody have experience, or thoughts, on the 81's or the 81DM's?  What would some of the distinctive characteristics of these other types be that might differ from the 81D's?  Any foreseeable drawbacks?  Any preferences?  Is there a benefit to combining them, and if so -- would one position (Q1, Q2, or Q3) benefit from being a specific type that would do the job best within the topology of the circuit?

DMs should be the same as Ds, only in a smaller package or with a more compact pinout. Not sure if there will be any sonic differences between the regular OC81s and the driver version when they are biased the same. Give it a try and tell us :)

Here's the data sheet for a set that included an OC81 and a driver:
