I've salvaged a couple lm358 chips from an old board and I found that they could be used in a preamp circuit, however most of the samples I see in the web are basic audio amplifiers. Being somewhat new and inexperienced in this kind of stuff I wanted your guys' opinions and if I can make a decent preamp out of them.

The LM358 isn't something you would put in high end gear.    They can be pretty noisy and they aren't very fast   The LM324  (the quad version) was often used in cheap car stereos, especially those add-on graphic equalizers.

There's also crossover disortion which you can reduce by adding a resistor to the output.  This is nicely explained here,

Beyond that you can pretty much plug the LM358 into any circuit you find, well, except where specific OPAMP characteristics are require.  The point being is they are just an opamp.

According to the water analogy of electricity, transistor leakage is caused by holes.
