Hello, this is my first post. I was looking for a forum to post questons about pedal tinkering and found this forum, it looked very friendly and usefull so I hope you can help me ;D.

I am in the process of modding a Boss ds-1. This is the first pedal I ever modded, so I am very new to this. I did a lot of mods, including completely removing the tone-stack, because I really disliked the sound it produced. It sounds completely different now. But, now I was looking to make a simple treble control/low pass filter in it's place for added flexibility.

I soldered the input and output wires of the tone control together, soldered them to the middle lug of a 500k pot and added a capacitor from the right lug to the back of the pot, which I connected to ground.

But, it isn't doing anything. There are no, or barely any, highs removed. I checked the potentiometer with a multimeter and it seems to be working. I changed caps also, but still nothing... Any tips what I should do next?

Hi and Welcome..

Could you post a draft schematic of your particular tonestack and circuit placement..??

Oh yes, of course.

I don't know if the capacitor value is correct, but the capacitor came from a tone knob from an old strat copy, and there it worked fine.

The output of the distortion stage is 2.2k or less.

A 500k pot has to be turned down to 0.4% to make a real change against 2k. So 99+% of the rotation is useless. And a 500k pot may not turn-down to 0.4%.

Try 10k pot and 100n cap?

Try what Paul said..

You can tweak cap value but stay on 10k pot value 'cause it's "loaded" by (set in parallel with) 100k Volume pot..
(of course, you can move it after output buffer but it should be nothing for something..)

Thanks, that's really helpfull. I really appreciate it!! I haven't got any 10k pots lying around though, so I will have to order one. Once I have installed it, I will report back.

Those tonecontrols look interesting, I think I will put that in there.

My package came in this morning, and I installed the tone control right away.

I used one of the AMZ stupidly wonderful tone controls like davidh recommended:

I'm really happy with the tone control! It was a bit harsh at first but I tweaked the value of R14 and now it's good! Thanks for the help.
