You can try a 10K or a 20K/25K pot to get lower voltage values. You indeed can get 4.5V right at the middle of the pot, but that'll ask for one or two trimpots connected to the pot so 4.5V is right in the middle.

Ok so I have added a 10k trimmer between the pcb and the external 8k bias pot. Adjusting the trimmer has allowed me to get 4.5 volts at dead center on the bias pot, with a range of 3.0 to 6.3 volts.
