What's this particular diode for?

I've been using a variant of this relay bypass in my pedals and blindly ported over the D1, but I'm struggling to understand under what circumstance it's useful.  If it's simply polarity protection, why not put it before the regulator?

freewheel diode is so there isn't a big voltage spike when de-coupling a inductor.

friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

I like "snubbing " diode. Other forms of snubbing are available. Take back that back-EMF!
