what's something cool you can make with medium gain Silicon NPNs?

As I have quite a few of them.  Thinking mostly about over drive/distortion stuff.

Hfe measures between 150-190 on these.  Or hfe, whatever it is the little tester spits out.

Big muff! My favorite Big Muff uses lower gain transistors.

iainpunk

cascade them in a darlington configuration and use them for a Bazz Fuss
those values seem to be alright for most buffer situations,
the Super Fuzz is also using low gain transistors, if you like the ranunchy noise, or a Companion Fuzz FY-2.

cheers, Iain
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

Yup, it's surprising to many just how frequently fuzzes of this or that type use lower-gain transistors.  That doesn't mean higher-gain are "the wrong kind" to use; just that one doesn't absolutely need them.

Yeah, y'know being mostly digital, old Larry here doesn't have a good feel for this stuff.

Keep em coming!  thx

Current sources for CV, have any OTAs? VCOs

Any matched enough for a ladder filter? Seems possible (i only skimmed over this): https://www.eddybergman.com/2019/12/synthesizer-build-part-7-moog-ladder.html
