Klon clone sounds weird

Hello pedal builders!

I need some help figuring out why my Klon kit doesn't sound like it should.

I purchased the Klon kit from Aliexpress a couple of weeks ago. After some hours of fiddling i managed to get it working, but the sound is really weird. It's hard to explain but it's noisy, almost fuzzy, but not in a good way. Here's a short clip of how it sounds: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1rVoyqQmrAix3UM_apqcCvLSjN7L4Thjn/view?usp=sharing.

I followed the instructions on the black and white (not super clear) instructions that came with the kit and got som help from this blog post: https://guitargearfinder.com/guides/build-klon-centaur-clone-kit/. This is the same kit as the one I built.

During the building process i made two mistakes (that I know of). The first was that i oriented one of the 4001 diodes (the one to the right) the wrong way. The second mistake was connecting a battery with a DC-plug in the DC-jack. I think that the DC-plug was center positive. Anyway IC1 (7660) was slightly warm after unplugging the battery. Could i have damaged it? And could this be the reason why the pedal sounds broken?

I toke som readings with my multimeter. The battery read: 8.99v. When reading from ground (enclosure) to plus on the PCB the reading was 8.05v

All the best!

the first IC's voltages seem wrong.
check the components around that opamp
maybe switch places with another opamp to check if its the chip or if its the circuit

cheers, Iain
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.

The first IC is a voltage converter and it might be fine. Do not switch that with any op amps. Yes you can damage things with wrong PS polarity but hopefully there are protection diodes. Of course if those are the wrong way around...

Take pics of your build.

Sorry, just saw the pics

"...and weird on top!"

Thanks Iain and Garcho!

I will order a new IC to relapse IC1. Hopefully this will work.

i didn't realize that (i thought i read 4558), those voltage might be right in that case, i'm not familiar with voltage converters, sorry!

The voltages on the opamps look about right to me, so I would assume that the voltage converter is working correctly for now
