Is there any particular reason for Q3 to be the only socketed transistor..??

Yes, jfets are expensive.

It's 2N7000, it's the only mosfet I have in stock.

So, I had some time today to work on the pedal and I tried a couple different jfets. All my 2n5457 ones clipped the signal but for some reason a j201 worked better.
