So here is what I'm going to build.

Need to buy the 4049 chip but there is so many versions.
These are on Mouser.. Is CD4049UBE the one I want?
Is UB = Unbuffered?

I also searched for a buffered one and found it here:
https://www.banzaimusic.com/CD4049-buffered.html

Is the buffered one better for my use?
All the new ones on Mouser etc seems to be unbuffered.

Thanks

"All" these distortion circuits using hex investors need unbuffered. UBE.

If you are looking at mouser, double and triple check that your'e not getting surface mount (unless that's your thing.) You want DIP.

The "old fashioned" IC package is the DIP. (In cave man days they had those metal cans and things, but that was before logic CMOS...)

Actually, this is for a latching flip-flop control. Any CMOS inverter should work.
I would order several CD4049UBE then you can make plenty of other circuits that do need unbuffered with that one type.

+1 what idy said.

The "UB" part of those codes is "unbuffered" as you surmised. The letters after that are likely a package code, and you want to make sure you've got something you can deal with. DIP is good because you can breadboard it. SOIC is a large enough surface mount package that it's pretty easily soldered on a PCB, but you can't stick it on a stripboard to prototype with it. Aside from those, there are a billion other chip packages now and most of them are a nightmare for anyone who's not an assembly robot.

Dare I say it? - check the datasheet!

Early CMOS was a lot in a ceramic "flatpack", and later a lot in round cans.

This shows TTL in a flatpack, but I was salvaging CMOS in the same form from mystery surplus PCBs.
