may explain why sometimes a reverse biased transistor may just sound better for some circuits.

Neat stuff Jimi.  I make little oscillators using negistors once in a while, like they discuss - very simple and good bang for the buck.  Good for 'indicators' and such, say in an alarm or metronome circuit or to impress your kids.  Didn't know you could set up white noise with them -- synth potential...

The reverse avalanche BJT noise source is an old trick and featured in many synth things.
The problem for us is that it might only work with a particular device at voltages from 7v up. A particular BJT may make enough noise at 9v, but you may still have to select the best part. 12v is much more reliable.
Note that the collector is not used in the noise application. You can sometimes find a transistor with one leg missing in some gear so you can guess what its job might be.

dont think ive ever tried messing with these but might spark something for someone

Reminds me of the VOX Repeat Percussion.
friendly reminder: all holes are positive and have negative weight, despite not being there.
