Dallas Rangemaster: voltage collector

Strange thing, I removed the 470K resistor, it still makes sound. I use 2SA102 and I measure the VC voltage is still around 7 Volts, it works like a fet.
After I searched it turned out to be like Tone Bender MK1, which can be without bias.

Unfortunately the capacitor is too big if it is installed in the jack, maybe in the guitar.
