Tonebender MKIII and guitar volume roll off

I just finished building a Tonebender MKIII, it sounds great and the voltages on Q1, Q2 and Q3 look right (I set Q3 collector voltage to 4.5V and Q1/Q2 at 3.2V).
But, as soon as I roll the guitar volume off (even just a little bit), it sounds dull and lifeless..is that normal?

its not a fuzz face, i have read that complaint before, regarding original units.
