I'm based in the UK.

I thought the standard boss pedal power barrel was a 5.5 x 2.1 mm. So I ordered one with a free end for a project I'm working on, it fits, but its too long. What's the standard length?  I've noticed that shopping for a 5.5 x 2.1mm there is no length mentioned.

Isn't 5.5mm the length?  2.1mm diameter?

Mine are that long, and fit well...I believe it IS the correct size. Maybe the supplier screwed up??

How is "too long" a problem? Sorry, I'm not seeing it. If the plug is too long, all that would happen is that some metal would be visible sticking out, right? With a not-very-dangerous 9V on it.

I can see "too short" doesn't work. Plug doesn't go far enough into the socket and doesn't make a good connection. That would be bad.

What am I missing?

Thanks,
Tom

The risk of short..
(with any hanging around bare wire..)

Aww, go on! You'd *really* have to try to get a short, poking around with a bit of bare wire down the back of your pedal, *and* making sure the other end was connected to something awful at the same time! Not easy.

I suppose if you poured water/beer/lucozade/your favourite beverage all over it, you could perhaps short the 9V to the enclosure, if there was some bit that wasn't painted nearby, but if you're tipping drinks all over your pedals, you've got other problems beyond having long power plugs! ;)

5.5 mm is the OD of the plug, and 2.1 mm is the pin diameter.  Some use a 2.5 mm pin to prevent interworking (Alesis 9V AC for example.)

I have some of those Tayda plugs and they are pretty junky. Also the chrome plating is not easy to solder to, you have to scrape it off. Radio shack used to sell the hard plastic kind with much better threads.

my point posting was not that tayda have DC plugs, but that there is two barrel lengths so common that tayda carries both sizes.
