A good Noise Gate suggestion

Just want to start with a noise gate project for myself and a friend (my first official order, yay!)

I seek nothing fancy, something without a send-return function (not needed), just to cut the hi-gain feedback & noise when not played (low-tuned, heavy-metal guitarist here) attack & decay are optional, I can set & forget them internally via Trimpot's even.

I was checking the MXR Noise Gate due to its simplicity, but there are disputes everywhere about the accuracy of the layouts & schematics provided on the Tonepad & effectslayouts blog. Some say it's working, whereas some fail to do so and suggest lots of changes. Also, the comments & build reports on both pages are quite old, so I'm unsure about their up-to-dateness, so I'm quite baffled right now about which one to follow.

ISP Decimator is a no-go due to unobtainable THAT ic, btw.

Any help will be most appreciated.

If the goal is to actually use it effectively and not just to exercise your building skills I urge you to reconsider. There is no good noise gate without a sidechain: you're stuck with either hiss (if you use it before distortion) or touchy threshold and abrupt decay (if you use it after).
I'm all for DIY but I just went for the Behringer NS-2 clone (modded for quicker decay) when I found myself needing a gate.

The SSM2166 and 67 both include excellent downward expansion, in addition to great compression, and are about as simple a build as making a grilled cheese sandwich.  You do not need to use the compression, but it's there if you want.

I don't know if this one is a 'good' noisegate but it's one have had on my board since I built it ages ago. I don't actually need a gate but really like the 'slow gears' effect it can give

Please don't focus on the term "good" that much, I just mean "something working as it should be" by that.

A hold control can help tail-end fizz.  Some noise gates have a bit of a hold effed without having a control.   While good noise gates can be made with JFETs the VCA types are easier to get working but then you need a good VCA.
