What's going on with the Boss PD-1?

I found a Boss PD-1 Rocker Distortion for cheap at a local pawnshop on account of it not working (15 seconds of analysis told me the output jack had a broken wire) so I finangled these schematics from another post on this forum to try to see how it works.

Now the basic topology I understand. Common-emmitter buffer goes into op amp with assymetrical soft clipping goes into hard clipping stage goes into simple tone control goes into level control, goes through flip flop shenanigans, goes through output common-emitter buffer. There's a bunch of passive filter throughout.

Now what confuses me is the warping circuit. Basically everything to them left of and above the op amp. I'm assuming it's some sort of way to make it so heel-down is a softclipped OD but toe-down is a hard clipped distortion?

Can anyone help me understand this?
