Seems plausible, I once built a muff variation for a friend with germanium transistors in the clipping stages, where I NEEDED silicon diodes to get just Distortion at full gain. It was nowhere near Fuzz type of gain.
But one nice thing about high fV diodes (in the first clipping stage) is that you have more gain for the second stage. At least when using a higher hfe transistor. I personally like the combination of LEDs with smaller series Capacitor in the first stage and Silicon diodes with bigger series capacitor in the second stage. Both higher hfe transistors.
One reason I like the big muff circuit so much is because you can tailor the sound so much, and you often get a very different sound with just very little change.

But one thing I must say, to vary the amount of compression the circuit delivers, your approach is way better than what I did with the second clipping stage. If you vary the gain of the second stage instead of the clipping threshold, you don't have to counteract a change in Volume.
