Hey gang newbie question for ya.
I am building a Mosfet booster using a IRF511 Transistor. I have been looking for the pin out for it on the internet. The one I got says it is GDS  and it is described as a switching transistor. I got some help with the transistors at a local store. I don't know any thing about mosfet transistors. Can they be used for switching and amplifying ? Also How easy are they to damage Thank YOu!

A switching transistor can be used as an amplifier just fine.  Usually the difference between "switching" and "general pupose amplifier"  and "audio amplifier" is related to the optimization trade-offs that are chosen in the silicon manufacturing process.

A switching transistor, for instance, may be a little more noisy for an audio application.  Or it may simply be overkill for power handling capabilities for small-signal applications.

Whatever the trade-off, what you're using is fine and it will work as long as you get the gate, drain and source connected correctly.

One word of caution:  Keep the soldering as cool and short duration as possible.  Heat may be more likely to damage a MOSFET than a BJT.

A Tip:  I have been using 2N7000 mfets for most of my FET projects and have been pleased.

I ordered 100 2N7000 MOSFETS from Mouser for only $6.00.  100 Fets is al lot of projects...they're as cheap as resistors.
