Hello,

has anyone used this effect unit? If so how well does it sound and track? Are there any comparible DIY projects for this effect unit?

Thanks

Rodgre

In my opinion, it's the best tracking octave box out there. It's much nicer than the Boss, which isn't terrible either.

It's also smart enough that you can often play chords on the guitar, and it will track the lowest note only, not make a garbled mess.

Craig Anderton's "Rocktave" project, which you can still purchase from PAiA (www.paia.com) or build from absolute scratch using the info at generalguitargadgets.com, is probably one of the better analog octave-down units out there.  Anderton uses a compander chip in a clever way to provide more accurate tracking and kill the octave signal before it risks mistracking.  There are tons of potential mods for it.  Enough that the question "How does it sound?" is pointless (a bit like asking "What colour is it?" about a chameleon).

The only downside is that there is no way you'll ever fit it into a 1590BB.  If you can line up a suitable enclosure for it, though (and that *could* be by buying it from PAiA), it is well worth making.

The EBS unit is different.  I built a rockatve from a kit for a friend and have tried a EBS.  The EBS is very cool it tracks the best out of all the units I have compared it to(blue box, boss, rocktave).

The rocktave is very good.  I think the EBS tracks better.

I wouldn't doubt it.  I just like to have the few hundred dollars difference between them to play around with.

Great,

Thanks for the replies. I was thinking about the Craig Anderton version. I have a few NE570 IC's around. I have used a few octave pedals before but haven't found any I like.

I think I will give the EBS a try. I guess I was asking how it well it sounded and tracked compared to the other octave units out there. I have used the Boss OC-2. I am looking for something better.

I will check out the generalguitargadgets site as well.

Thanks again,
