Stabilize the output?

Hi guys.

I've read several schematics were you see an RC network (resistor - cap) to help 'stabilize the output'.

What does this mean? Prevent oscillation?

Could you describe the circuit and location of the R/C network?

Some are for frequency filtering and coupling to the next stage (or an amplifier or the next stompbox). Some are used in feedback loops to improve gain and distortion characteristics. Some, Zoebel networks,  are used in power amplifiers (even little ones) on the outputs. There's more, all related to performance and stability. Whatcha got?

If you are talking about series RC combinations across the output transformer, those are Zobel networks as Robin mentioned. Zobels try to counter the wacky impedance of a voice coil at different frequencies. Complex networks can do some amazing filtering, but we typically see the most basic form they can take. Some in-depth technical info can be found here.

You also see them in LM386 amps.
