aaahhh.....
'

A scintillator is a material that gives off light when a chargedGlossary Term particle passes through it. Typically it is a form of plastic, produced with traces of certain elements that are readily excited by the passing charged particle and then rapidly decayGlossary Term, thereby producing a photon.

Scintillator materials typically have a high index of refraction, so it is relatively easy to shape a piece of scintillator so that much of the light produced inside it is reflected off its surfaces and back into the material, and is eventually funneled into a phototube detectorGlossary Term placed at the end of a narrow wedge of the material.'

shoulda put the link in my earlier post.....
