Switchcraft Jacks...

I used a switchcraft enclosed jack for the input on my Dr. Boogey and the circuit is complete even when the input is not plugged in. Aside from the input jack, the positive battery lead goes directly to the circuit board. Any ideas what might be happening?

Some jacks are closed when unplugged. You need to get a stereo open jack.

Is there any way to alter the one I have so that it doesn't do that? I ordered it from Small Bear Electronics and it doesn't say anything about being 'open' or 'closed.' Thats kind of irritating that they'd just be hit or miss as to whether they're open or closed...

Is there a set of lugs on the end or just 3? Sometimes they have extra lugs and if you use your continuity function on your meter, you can test the lugs and see if there are some lugs that are not switched. Not sure though....

Black square stereo ones right ?
They normally have 5 lugs, so they can be wired normally open OR closed.
As aron said, get out your DMM, or just eyeballing the contacts should tell
you which is sleeve/tip/ring, mine are not closed at the back end, so I can see
all the inside contacts, if yours are sealed at the back then it's a DMM check.
