For those of you interest the UK guitar magazine guitar (the one by publishers ITC), have a review of the nano head (mentioning it's negistor).

They also have mention of the stage gear used by the Australian Pink Floyd (having heard them on stage they sound pretty like the original). Listing their own pedal setups (mostly digital on stage :( & analogue when they record).

They also touch (briefly) on the whale sounds during echos and the phasor used on WYWH.

I can't find a website for the magazine unfortunitely.

Regards,

cool.  i'd love a copy of that magazine, and would pay for the cost and shipping, if anyone cares to send me a copy.  8^)

Kilby

NP, will get another copy of the mag this evening.

The echoes whale sounds come from plugging in a wah pedal backwards. You set the pedal to where it starts oscillating and control the squeal with your guitar volume. It will vary the volume and pitch as you turn it up. Add a little delay and you have instant echoes.

Thats what I had been told previously as well, I think Adrian Belew used the wah method on the Young Lions album.

They arn't playing near me till August next year so I can't see what they're doing till then.

Though Steve Mac (from the Aus PF), claims that it took him 10 years to fine the piece of equipment.

I assume if it's a one of a kind (well four off) they don't tour with it, so perhaps the wah is used in live versions (both bands) to protect the originals.

quote: "That's a particular piece of equipment from the 1960's which isn't designed for guitar. Apparently there are only four of them in the world -  I have one and David Gilmour has the other three. It hasn't actually got a name and it's been a 10-year quest for the holy grail to get it. I'm afraid that one's going to the grave with me!"

Having seen PF twice, and DG twice solo I can certainly say that they get the sounds damn close whatever they use.

Don't know about that but I did the whale sounds easily with a stock dunlop cry baby.

Perhaps this is the Uber equivalent of a boutique Fuzz Face :)

Two ways of doing the same job but owning one of them hits you real hard in the pocket.

Maybe. But there are older interviews with Waters (and maybe Gilmour too) where they said the backwards wah is basically what they did. It was a happy accident. :D

/me votes for the cheap method :)

wah... yore kidding.. i have never heard of this.  i have always done it with heavy delay. and volume swells with some prevolume  whammy

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

I can't quite see how plugging a wah in backwards would give any kind of oscillation... any comments? anyone??

Kilby

Well I dunno though I have heard that before, though I havn't had a chance to try it as I ain't got a wah pedal.

Still possibly Father Christmas will be kind to me this year.

All I can say is try it. This is without input/output buffers and etc. I don't know how that would affect it. It worked perfectly on my unmodified dunlop wah a few years ago. It's a lot of fun actually, more of a novelty than anything AFAIC. I have not done any analysis on it.

Backwards Wah makes some strange noises, I've tried it.

No idea about the Pink Floyd sound though.
